Garbo 嘉寶傳奇
《嘉寶傳奇》 其實係一般演員傳記紀錄片, 但主角係Screen Legend Greta Garbo, 咁又唔同d.
先講番入場率, 風聞甚少網友有興趣睇呢套片. 太空館個場咁細都有幾十人睇, 我有少少感動. 我係文化中心撞到一個朋友, 佢話對嘉寶一竅不通, 揭勻成本電影節catalogue, 都搵唔到嘉寶全名... 你地都可想而知本地人對嘉寶o既認識有幾深. 我唯有同朋友講: 「佢同瑪蓮德烈治有類似背景囉!」
講番嘉寶, 《嘉寶傳奇》 都搵到幾多同嘉寶有關o既人(片段) 做訪問. 例如嘉寶侄女侄孫、 Louis B. Mayer (MGM美高梅演員經理人) 個外孫、嘉寶童年好友、老年密友、嘉寶舊愛John Gilbert女兒, 連一個以前成日係紐約撞到嘉寶 (但興奮得唔敢上前結識) o既演員, 都走出黎回憶嘉寶一二事. (嘉寶真人十分樂觀幽默, 同做戲時苦情同冷傲係兩回事)
《嘉寶傳奇》紀錄片又插入多套嘉寶主演o既默片、有聲片同新聞片段, 又分析一下佢息影、隱居o既理由 (年事漸高、電影票房不佳、戰爭爆發等等) , 以及感情生活o既內幕 (嘉寶曾打算同銀幕拍檔、戲迷情人John Gilbert結婚, 更以息影威脅MGM讓步. 而MGM亦準備放棄難以適應有聲片演出o既John Gilbert , 加上酗酒等問題, John Gilbert事業日走下坡, 最終令嘉寶拒婚. 而John Gilbert差唔多最後一套電影《Queen Christina》, 仲係由分左手o既嘉寶要求電影公司俾佢做男主角, 一年後John Gilbert就心臟病發死左) .
嘉寶曾經想過復出, 息影八年後, 拍過電影試片 (竟然係由名攝影師黃宗霑James Wong Howe操刀!) 當時佢風采依然, 雖面上增添少少皺紋, 但無減其個人魅力.
嘉寶大部份"悲劇"電影, 以現今角度黎睇, 演繹都幾煽情. 但嘉寶不愧係嘉寶, 有佢坐鎮, 一套平庸電影都可以變得好有睇頭. 大特寫o既嘉寶仲好似大理石雕像咁莊嚴. 但我最鍾意o既都係佢套喜劇《情迷冰美人》(Ninotchka, 1939). 如果佢當年再下一乘努力轉型, 可能唔會咁快息影. 可惜劉別謙死得太早!

I was also quite surprised to see a larger-than-expected turnout at the screening of the Garbo documentary. Turner Classic Movies produces quite a number of good film-related documentaries, and it would be good if more of them can be seen in Hong Kong on the big screen.
If there could be a showcase featured on famous leading ladies from Hollywood such as Gloria Swanson, Lilian Gish, Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, etc... it would really bring to light how glamorous those years were and how influential they were in the way beauty and style was defined... to the point how we are still influenced by them today.

Lilian Gish lived to just a few months short of 100. The things the likes of her must have seen... and she really would have had a lot to compare between the early days of Hollywood all the way to the late 1980's.
Even if it sounds a bit tabloid-ish and trivial, I would love to see a good documentary made about all the legends that many think of as the "dark side" of Hollywood's golden age... here're some just off-the-top of my head:
- The Fatty Arbuckle rape/murder that killed his career, but supposedly he was framed.
- The William Desmond murder that inspired Billy Wilder in writing Sunset Blvd.
- Errol Flynn's bad-boy deeds... in fact, all the bad boys that lived on Mulholland drive.
- legends surrounding Mulholland drive that inspired David Lynch to make a movie named after the neighborhood.
-- what kind of difficulties and race-based obstacles people like James Wong Howe, and Anna May Wong, etc... had to go through during their time in Hollywood.

希望Anna May Wong的紀錄片盡快亮相吧. (不過香港觀眾對James Wong Howe沒有反應, 可能年代太久)

watching at the Science Museum screening, I was impressed how clear the picture was. The Garbo documentary is a made-for-tv video, but when it was projected onto the big screen, the picture quality is superb.
I remember watching a screening years ago at the HKIFF--a documentary done on betacamsp, and the quality was not that good (colors would get separated at the edge of the screen), but this was just like it was done on 35mm.
technology must have improved significantly over the past few years with digital projection.
